Mountain View Printing Acquires Calgary’s Humphries Printing
September 5, 2024
Mountain View Printing has acquired Humphries Printing, a boutique family-owned business in Calgary. It’s not every day you come across a company that spans three generations, but Mountain View and Humphries’ histories are both rooted in printing legacies, each tracing their printing lineage back more than 80 years.
Established in Calgary
Humphries Printing has been a family operation since the 1940s when K.P. Humphries founded a small print shop in Calgary’s Mission District.
The business was passed down to his son, Kenneth, and then to his grandson, Michael, who joined in 1991.
Over the years, Humphries became known for its specialized legal forms, incorporation supplies, and exceptional art gallery brochures, earning them a reputation for precision colour matching that loyal customers would occasionally remark exceeded the original artwork.
“This new adventure for Humphries Printing is exciting. It gives us new energy.”
– Michael Humphries
Continuing the Family Trade at Mountain View
Mountain View Printing’s owner, Gary Fairgrieve-Park, can also trace his family’s printing history back three generations. Gary’s grandfather, Edwin Fairgrieve-Park, purchased a print shop in Saskatoon in the late 1940s where Edwin’s son (and Gary’s father), Don, worked in the shop in his youth.
While the original print shop was sold before Gary was born, he continued the family tradition by earning his Journeyman Press Operator certification in Alberta.
Gary joined Mountain View Printing in 1995 and later bought a partnership stake in 2009, joining long-time owner, B.J. Chandler, at the helm. After nearly 30 years in the business, Gary became the sole owner of Mountain View Printing when B.J. retired in late 2023.
“Growth is nice, but this partnership is really about honouring the craftsmanship and relationships that both companies have built over decades.”
– Gary Fairgrieve-Park
The Legacy Lives On
The acquisition of Humphries Printing marks a significant step for Mountain View. As small businesses themselves, both companies recognize that small enterprise is the backbone of the Alberta economy. Together, they will continue serving local clients, now offering an even more diverse suite of print services.
Mountain View is excited to welcome Michael to the Mountain View Printing Sales and Customer Service Team. This move will ensure continuity to Humphries’ client base and provide added value and expertise for Mountain View customers. Both Mountain View and Humphries’ are pleased that the legacy of these companies will continue to thrive.
